[[:commons:WikiPortraits|WikiPortraits]] ([https://www.wikiportraits.org/ wikiportraits.org]) is a volunteer-driven initiative to capture high-quality portrait photographs for use on Wikipedia. Our goal is to increase the visual representation of notable figures, especially those from underrepresented communities, on Wikipedia and its sister projects. Wikipedia is one of the ten most visited websites in the world, serving more than 2 billion users every month. Yet Wikipedia pages for public figures often lack high-quality photos due to licensing restrictions. Most press photos are under commercial copyright and cannot be used under Wikipedia’s free-content guidelines. WikiPortraits was created to address this gap by sending credentialed volunteer photographers to photograph notable individuals at film festivals, conferences, and other major events—including the Nobel Prize ceremonies, Cannes Film Festival, Sundance, Venice, SXSW, CES, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and the Pulitzer Prizes. Our photos from these events have been used across nearly 200 language editions of Wikipedia, collectively reaching more than 200 million views per month. The Toronto International Film Festival is a key event in our annual calendar. TIFF combines international visibility, cultural importance, and an openness to emerging photographers, including those based in Toronto. In 2024, our team covered over 100 red carpets at TIFF, uploading more than 2,000 photos shot by nine photographers. Although we struggled last year to find Canada-based photographers who could confidently shoot a red carpet, we’ve now cultivated strong local talent, thanks in part to recent media coverage in 404 Media and the BBC that boosted visibility and interest in the project. We are applying for press credentials for TIFF 2025 in order to continue this impactful work. Our goals this year include: - Capturing high-quality, freely-licensed portraits of notable individuals attending TIFF. - Expanding representation of global cinema talent, including filmmakers and performers from low- and middle-income countries. - Supporting local Toronto photographers by subsidizing meals and late-night transit during shoots. While our Wikimedia Foundation grant helps cover travel and lodging for out-of-town contributors, this application is focused on securing the media access needed to carry out this work at TIFF. We believe this festival offers one of the highest-impact opportunities of the year to improve Wikipedia’s visual coverage of global cinema. == List of participants == ''Indicate here the list of participants that will incur expenses for this activity; you do not need to list all participants that will take part in the activity.
