I would like to ask about the community's thoughts about switching the fallback language of this Wikipedia from Spanish to English in order to facilitate easier understanding of the site as most speakers of Chavacano are not speakers of Spanish.

The dialect is used more conversationally, but less in academic texts. My Chavacano knowledge is very limited, I would have to ask for an experienced native to help me out on this. There is no official word for Template, however, “plantilya” is also used in cebwiki, so I left it the same as Spanish (probably needs discussion). We are inviting you to participate in the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2024 campaign, a global contest scheduled to run from July through August 2024:

Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photo images, then add a suitable file from among the many thousands of photos in the Wikimedia Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests (Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over the years.

In its first year (2020), 36 Wikimedia communities in 27 countries joined the campaign. Events relating to the campaign included training organized by at least 18 Wikimedia communities in 14 countries.

The campaign resulted in the addition of media files (photos, audios and videos) to more than 90,000 Wikipedia articles in 272 languages.

Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) offers an ideal task for recruiting and guiding new editors through the steps of adding content to existing pages. Besides individual participation, the WPWP campaign can be used by user groups and chapters to organize editing workshops and edit-a-thons.

I was thinking that maybe we could compromise on using templates and modules in English rather than Spanish. Much more detail can be understood by other Chavacano speakers when using English as opposed to Spanish where most words are unfamiliar to those native in the language. In the Tagalog Wikipedia, documentation for templates and modules link to the English version, so I think it would be best if it was like that for the Chavacano Wikipedia and translate more commonly used template/module names and/or documentations instead of just using pure Spanish, where there is a possibility of misunderstanding. == Change the fallback language to Tagalog ==

Since the [https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Support/Archive/2008/1#cbk-zam_Chavacano_de_Zamboanga last change to the fallback language] done by [[User:Weekeejames]] back in 2008, there have been previous discussions on reverting it back to English: the [https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Support/Archive/2009/9#Fallback_language_for_cbk-zam.wikipedia.org_78 first one] was when User:Weekeejames requested to switch it back after having difficulty doing translations for the interface, and the [[m:Special:MyLanguage/Steward_requests/Miscellaneous/2021-09#Delete_Spanish_pages_on_Chavacano_Wikipedia_(cbk-zam)|second]] was when a user requested the switch on account of the fact that Chavacano speakers cannot entirely understand Spanish. In my personal opinion, it would be more practical to change the fallback language to Tagalog for the following reasons:
* Spanish and Chavacano are not the same. While they share similar words, the grammatical structure is very different. Most technical words do not translate well into Chavacano, leading to confusion.
* The target audience is Zamboanga Chavacano speakers. Using Spanish for an audience where either Tagalog or English are mainly spoken is very impractical.
* While there are good reasons to switching to English, I feel that it would not have much of a reach compared to Tagalog. There is the local saying that English is &quot;nakaka-nosebleed&quot; because not everyone is taught English the same way. Tagalog would cater to a wider community instead of just the people that are always on the internet since most have it as their first or second language.
* Tagalog is not an unfamiliar language to the target audience. I think that it would fill in the gaps of untranslated messages better than Spanish because people would actually understand the messages.
* Switching to Tagalog would aid in translation because of the similarities they share in word structure.
* New users will not be discouraged to edit because the interface would be familiar to them.
We should reach a consensus on the matter because it not only affects the Chavacano Wikipedia, but other MediaWiki projects as well. == Should different Chavacano dialects be on the CBK-ZAM Wikipedia? ==

There have been recent discussions on the [https://www.reddit.com/r/Chavacano/comments/1494hbs/help_at_the_chavacano_wikipedia r/Chavacano subreddit] about whether to include articles written in other Chavacano dialects such as Caviteño Chavacano. I believe it is better to move the discussions on-wiki as per [[en:WP:OFF]] to reach proper consensus.

I think a separate Chavacano Wikipedia project should exist because of how different both dialects are in terms of word usage and sentence construction. If we were to simultaneously use both Zamboangueño and Caviteño dialects in separate articles on the same Wikipedia, it would not serve its purpose of being a knowledge base because, despite being somewhat mutually intelligible, articles (and navigating the Wikipedia in general) would be difficult to read naturally by speakers who have either as their first language.

However, it has been pointed out to me by @[[Usuario:Caro de Segeda|Caro de Segeda]] that some Wikipedias do accept different dialects of the same language family, employing [[meta:Wikipedias in multiple writing systems|automatic multi-writing systems]] and header templates to indicate what dialect the article is in. While I am not sure that we should retain the header templates, the multi-writing system is a good idea since it allows for an article to have its contents switched between the two dialects.

But, if we were to implement this, there is the problem of the ISO code. Currently, this Wikipedia has the prefix ''cbk-zam'' instead of just ''cbk''. Before we are to do these changes, we need to deal with that first.

Mentioning @[[Usuario:Sky Harbor|Sky Harbor]] and @[[Usuario:Exec8|Exec8]] for your thoughts. Also @[[Usuario:Amire80|Amire80]] and @[[Usuario:Chlod|Chlod]] for possible help on the technical side.

:On the technical side, changing the subdomain of a wiki is currently near impossible as [[phab:T172035]] remains unresolved, but it seems there's some recent work on trying to get this unblocked. On the other technical side, usually having dialects of the same language would require a language converter. I've discussed this with Sky Harbor before, but assuming the language rules of Zamboangueño and Caviteño are similar enough, it's possible to use a language converter here. The idea of translating these special pages began when I saw the Chavacano translation of the namespace &quot;AllPages&quot; as 'Todas'. And as a native Zamboangueño Chavacano speaker, this is incorrect, it did came from Spanish and it does mean 'all', but in Chavacano &lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;Todas&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt; does not mean 'all', it means 'loud', as in &lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;Bien todas man 'se videoke de inyo!&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt; (&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;Your videoke is so loud!&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;). Noticing that, I decided to translate all of the namespaces in Chavacano.

I'm asking everyone's opinions on this. Thanks!

I was thinking that maybe we could compromise on using templates and modules in English rather than Spanish. Much more detail can be understood by other Chavacano speakers when using English as opposed to Spanish where most words are unfamiliar to those native in the language. In the Tagalog Wikipedia, documentation for templates and modules link to the English version, so I think it would be best if it was like that for the Chavacano Wikipedia and translate more commonly used template/module names and/or documentations instead of just using pure Spanish, where there is a possibility of misunderstanding. == Change the fallback language to Tagalog ==

Since the [https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Support/Archive/2008/1#cbk-zam_Chavacano_de_Zamboanga last change to the fallback language] done by [[User:Weekeejames]] back in 2008, there have been previous discussions on reverting it back to English: the [https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Support/Archive/2009/9#Fallback_language_for_cbk-zam.wikipedia.org_78 first one] was when User:Weekeejames requested to switch it back after having difficulty doing translations for the interface, and the [[m:Special:MyLanguage/Steward_requests/Miscellaneous/2021-09#Delete_Spanish_pages_on_Chavacano_Wikipedia_(cbk-zam)|second]] was when a user requested the switch on account of the fact that Chavacano speakers cannot entirely understand Spanish. In my personal opinion, it would be more practical to change the fallback language to Tagalog for the following reasons:
* Spanish and Chavacano are not the same. While they share similar words, the grammatical structure is very different. Most technical words do not translate well into Chavacano, leading to confusion.
* The target audience is Zamboanga Chavacano speakers. Using Spanish for an audience where either Tagalog or English are mainly spoken is very impractical.
* While there are good reasons to switching to English, I feel that it would not have much of a reach compared to Tagalog. There is the local saying that English is &quot;nakaka-nosebleed&quot; because not everyone is taught English the same way. Tagalog would cater to a wider community instead of just the people that are always on the internet since most have it as their first or second language.
* Tagalog is not an unfamiliar language to the target audience. I think that it would fill in the gaps of untranslated messages better than Spanish because people would actually understand the messages.
* Switching to Tagalog would aid in translation because of the similarities they share in word structure.
* New users will not be discouraged to edit because the interface would be familiar to them.
We should reach a consensus on the matter because it not only affects the Chavacano Wikipedia, but other MediaWiki projects as well. There have been recent discussions on the [https://www.reddit.com/r/Chavacano/comments/1494hbs/help_at_the_chavacano_wikipedia r/Chavacano subreddit] about whether to include articles written in other Chavacano dialects such as Caviteño Chavacano. I believe it is better to move the discussions on-wiki as per [[en:WP:OFF]] to reach proper consensus.

I think a separate Chavacano Wikipedia project should exist because of how different both dialects are in terms of word usage and sentence construction. If we were to simultaneously use both Zamboangueño and Caviteño dialects in separate articles on the same Wikipedia, it would not serve its purpose of being a knowledge base because, despite being somewhat mutually intelligible, articles (and navigating the Wikipedia in general) would be difficult to read naturally by speakers who have either as their first language.

However, it has been pointed out to me by @[[Usuario:Caro de Segeda|Caro de Segeda]] that some Wikipedias do accept different dialects of the same language family, employing [[meta:Wikipedias in multiple writing systems|automatic multi-writing systems]] and header templates to indicate what dialect the article is in. While I am not sure that we should retain the header templates, the multi-writing system is a good idea since it allows for an article to have its contents switched between the two dialects.

But, if we were to implement this, there is the problem of the ISO code. Currently, this Wikipedia has the prefix ''cbk-zam'' instead of just ''cbk''. Before we are to do these changes, we need to deal with that first.

:On the technical side, changing the subdomain of a wiki is currently near impossible as [[phab:T172035]] remains unresolved, but it seems there's some recent work on trying to get this unblocked. On the other technical side, usually having dialects of the same language would require a language converter. I've discussed this with Sky Harbor before, but assuming the language rules of Zamboangueño and Caviteño are similar enough, it's possible to use a language converter here. The idea of translating these special pages began when I saw the Chavacano translation of the namespace &quot;AllPages&quot; as 'Todas'. And as a native Zamboangueño Chavacano speaker, this is incorrect, it did came from Spanish and it does mean 'all', but in Chavacano &lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;Todas&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt; does not mean 'all', it means 'loud', as in &lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;Bien todas man 'se videoke de inyo!&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt; (&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;Your videoke is so loud!&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;). Noticing that, I decided to translate all of the namespaces in Chavacano.

I'm asking everyone's opinions on this. Thanks!

I was thinking that maybe we could compromise on using templates and modules in English rather than Spanish. Much more detail can be understood by other Chavacano speakers when using English as opposed to Spanish where most words are unfamiliar to those native in the language. In the Tagalog Wikipedia, documentation for templates and modules link to the English version, so I think it would be best if it was like that for the Chavacano Wikipedia and translate more commonly used template/module names and/or documentations instead of just using pure Spanish, where there is a possibility of misunderstanding. == Change the fallback language to Tagalog ==

Since the [https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Support/Archive/2008/1#cbk-zam_Chavacano_de_Zamboanga last change to the fallback language] done by [[User:Weekeejames]] back in 2008, there have been previous discussions on reverting it back to English: the [https://translatewiki.net/wiki/Support/Archive/2009/9#Fallback_language_for_cbk-zam.wikipedia.org_78 first one] was when User:Weekeejames requested to switch it back after having difficulty doing translations for the interface, and the [[m:Special:MyLanguage/Steward_requests/Miscellaneous/2021-09#Delete_Spanish_pages_on_Chavacano_Wikipedia_(cbk-zam)|second]] was when a user requested the switch on account of the fact that Chavacano speakers cannot entirely understand Spanish. In my personal opinion, it would be more practical to change the fallback language to Tagalog for the following reasons:
* Spanish and Chavacano are not the same. While they share similar words, the grammatical structure is very different. Most technical words do not translate well into Chavacano, leading to confusion.
* The target audience is Zamboanga Chavacano speakers. Using Spanish for an audience where either Tagalog or English are mainly spoken is very impractical.
* While there are good reasons to switching to English, I feel that it would not have much of a reach compared to Tagalog. There is the local saying that English is &quot;nakaka-nosebleed&quot; because not everyone is taught English the same way. Tagalog would cater to a wider community instead of just the people that are always on the internet since most have it as their first or second language.
* Tagalog is not an unfamiliar language to the target audience. I think that it would fill in the gaps of untranslated messages better than Spanish because people would actually understand the messages.
* Switching to Tagalog would aid in translation because of the similarities they share in word structure.
* New users will not be discouraged to edit because the interface would be familiar to them.
We should reach a consensus on the matter because it not only affects the Chavacano Wikipedia, but other MediaWiki projects as well. == Should different Chavacano dialects be on the CBK-ZAM Wikipedia? ==

There have been recent discussions on the [https://www.reddit.com/r/Chavacano/comments/1494hbs/help_at_the_chavacano_wikipedia r/Chavacano subreddit] about whether to include articles written in other Chavacano dialects such as Caviteño Chavacano. I believe it is better to move the discussions on-wiki as per [[en:WP:OFF]] to reach proper consensus.

I think a separate Chavacano Wikipedia project should exist because of how different both dialects are in terms of word usage and sentence construction. If we were to simultaneously use both Zamboangueño and Caviteño dialects in separate articles on the same Wikipedia, it would not serve its purpose of being a knowledge base because, despite being somewhat mutually intelligible, articles (and navigating the Wikipedia in general) would be difficult to read naturally by speakers who have either as their first language.

However, it has been pointed out to me by @[[Usuario:Caro de Segeda|Caro de Segeda]] that some Wikipedias do accept different dialects of the same language family, employing [[meta:Wikipedias in multiple writing systems|automatic multi-writing systems]] and header templates to indicate what dialect the article is in. While I am not sure that we should retain the header templates, the multi-writing system is a good idea since it allows for an article to have its contents switched between the two dialects.

But, if we were to implement this, there is the problem of the ISO code. Currently, this Wikipedia has the prefix ''cbk-zam'' instead of just ''cbk''. Before we are to do these changes, we need to deal with that first.

:On the technical side, changing the subdomain of a wiki is currently near impossible as [[phab:T172035]] remains unresolved, but it seems there's some recent work on trying to get this unblocked. On the other technical side, usually having dialects of the same language would require a language converter. I've discussed this with Sky Harbor before, but assuming the language rules of Zamboangueño and Caviteño are similar enough, it's possible to use a language converter here. The idea of translating these special pages began when I saw the Chavacano translation of the namespace &quot;AllPages&quot; as 'Todas'. And as a native Zamboangueño Chavacano speaker, this is incorrect, it did came from Spanish and it does mean 'all', but in Chavacano &lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;Todas&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt; does not mean 'all', it means 'loud', as in &lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;Bien todas man 'se videoke de inyo!&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt; (&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;Your videoke is so loud!&lt;nowiki&gt;''&lt;/nowiki&gt;). Noticing that, I decided to translate all of the namespaces in Chavacano. Thanks to chlod and aristokle for the help!
