An attempt to catalogue the Gothic form of various foreign names, both potential ones and those already in use.
For the names of people, Gothic might benefit from doing the same as Latvian (and partially Latin), where they add the native nominative ending to the name. A name like Charlie is not simply ''ฤฤrli'' in Latvian, but ''ฤฤrlij<u>s</u>''. That way, the strict system of native words and names can be applied to the foreign one. The same rule applies to feminine names in Latvian, however in that case, with an added ''-a'' or ''-e'' suffix. The surname of Charlie Chaplinโs mother is then ''ฤaplina''. While Gothic does have a few borrowed names that donโt fit within the native morphology, these are usually Biblical names from Ancient Greek where they donโt follow Greek morphology either.
In cases where the foreign name is Germanic, it might be easy to simply translate it. E.g. ๐๐ด๐น๐บ๐ฐ๐ท๐ฐ๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ for ''Richard'', instead of a semi-transcription like ๐๐น๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ณ๐.
==Names of people==
* Angela Merkel โ ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐น๐ป๐ฐ ๐ผ๐ฐ๐น๐๐บ๐น๐ป๐ (Aggaรญla Maรญrkilล). Transcription and partial translation of the surname, where the German diminutive ''-(e)l'' is replaced by Gothic ''-ilล''. Surname alternatively ๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐บ๐น๐ป๐ (Markilล) without i-umlaut, as a complete translation of ''Merkel'', diminutive of ''Mark'' (found in names like ''Markwart''), PGer. ''*markล''.
* Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden โ ๐บ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ป๐ ยท๐น๐ตยท ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ ๐๐
๐ฐ๐น๐ท๐ฐ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ณ๐น๐ (Karils ยทiqยท Gautastafs Swaรญhalandis). Translation, alternatively ๐บ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ป๐ฐ due to the prevalence of the n-stem form of the diminutive suffix in Gothic.
* Charles III of Great Britain โ ๐บ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ป๐ ยท๐ฒยท ๐ผ๐น๐บ๐น๐ป๐ฐ-๐ฑ๐๐น๐๐ฐ๐ฝ๐พ๐๐ (Karils ยทgยท Mikila-Britanjลs). Translation, alternatively ๐บ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ป๐ฐ due to the prevalence of the n-stem form of the diminutive suffix in Gothic.
* Charlie Chaplin โ ๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ป๐ด๐น๐ ๐๐๐ฐ๐๐ป๐น๐ฝ๐ (Tsarleis Tsaplins). Transcription with added m. nominative suffix. โจtsโฉ is used for the /tส/ sound, as there is no such affricate in Gothic. Cf. Greek, where this and similar sounds are transcribed as โจtsโฉ.
* Dolly Rebecca Parton โ ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ป๐ด๐น ๐๐น๐ฑ๐ฐ๐น๐บ๐ฐ ๐๐ฐ๐๐๐๐ฝ๐ฐ (Daรบlei Ribaรญka Partลna). Transcription with added feminine morphology, cf. Latvian ''Pฤrtone'' where ''-e'' is a feminine ending added to both native and foreign surnames.
* Donald John Trump โ ๐ณ๐๐ฝ๐ฐ๐ป๐ณ๐ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐. Transcription based on the way Germanic languages tend to acquire the name, cf. Donald Duck. Added m. nominative suffix.
* Elizabeth II of Great Britain โ ๐ฐ๐น๐ป๐ด๐น๐๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐น๐ธ๐ฐ ยท๐ฑยท ๐ผ๐น๐บ๐น๐ป๐ฐ-๐ฑ๐๐น๐๐ฐ๐ฝ๐พ๐๐ (Aรญleisabaรญรพa ยทbยท Mikila-Britanjลs). Translation, however nativised with a feminine suffix unlike the Biblical name.
* Elvis Presley โ ๐ฐ๐น๐ป๐ฑ๐ด๐น๐ ๐๐๐ฐ๐น๐๐ป๐ด๐น๐ (Aรญlbeis Praรญsleis). Transcription with added masculine nominative suffix.
* Fredrik X of Denmark โ ๐๐๐น๐ธ๐ฐ๐๐ด๐น๐บ๐ด๐น๐ ยท๐นยท ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฝ๐น๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐บ๐๐ (Friรพareikeis ยทiยท Danimarkลs). Translation. First name alternatively ๐๐๐น๐ธ๐ฟ๐๐ด๐น๐บ๐ (Friรพureiks), as ๐๐๐น๐ธ๐ฐ๐๐ด๐น๐บ๐ด๐น๐ is an irregular development and not a complete cognate of ''Fredrik'' (PGer. ''*Friรพurฤซks'').
* George VI of Great Britain โ ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐น๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ๐พ๐ฟ๐ ยท๐ตยท ๐ผ๐น๐บ๐น๐ป๐ฐ-๐ฑ๐๐น๐๐ฐ๐ฝ๐พ๐๐ (Gaรญaรบrgjus ยทqยท Mikila-Britanjลs). Translation to a Gothic form of the original Greek/Latin name, cf. German ''Georg''.
* George Walker Bush โ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐ณ๐ถ ๐
๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ป๐บ๐ฐ๐น๐๐ ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ (Dzaรบrdz Waรบlkaรญrs Bus). Transcription with added masculine morpheme. First name alternatively ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐น๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ๐พ๐ฟ๐ (Gaรญaรบrgjus) after Greek and Latin, cf. how other languages historically have used their own forms of the Greek/Latin name, e.g. for English kings.
* Harald V of Norway โ ๐ท๐ฐ๐๐พ๐ฐ๐
๐ฐ๐ป๐ณ๐ ยท๐ดยท ๐ฝ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐ธ๐๐ฐ๐
๐น๐ฒ๐น๐ (Harjawalds ยทeยท Naรบrรพrawigis). Translation.
* Hรฅkon of Norway (crown prince) โ ๐ท๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ท๐ฐ๐บ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ ๐ฝ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐ธ๐๐ฐ๐
๐น๐ฒ๐น๐ (Hรกuhakuns Naรบrรพrawigis), alternatively ๐ท๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ท๐ฐ๐บ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ (Hanhakuns). Translation, however the origin is debated. ''Hรฅkon'' (Old Norse ''Hรกkon'') may either come from ''*hauhaz'' (high) or ''*hanhaz'' (horse). The latter element is from ''*kuniz'' (kin; descendant, son), or a derivation of ''*kunjฤ
'' (kin).
* Jens Stoltenberg โ ๐น๐๐ท๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ฝ๐ด๐ ๐๐๐ฟ๐ป๐๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐น๐๐ฒ๐ (Iลhannฤs Stultabaรญrgs). Translation.
* Leonardo da Vinci โ ๐ป๐ฐ๐น๐
๐ฐ๐ท๐ฐ๐๐ณ๐ฟ๐ ๐๐๐ฐ๐ผ ๐
๐น๐ฝ๐๐๐พ๐ฐ (Laรญwahardus fram Wintsja). Translation and transcription with adaptation to Gothic phonology and morphology (''Vinci'' โ ''Wintsi'', dat. ''Winsja''). โจwโฉ due to its 1:1 relation to Latin (and thus Italian) โจvโฉ.
* Margrethe II of Denmark โ ๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐น๐บ๐๐ด๐น๐๐ฐ ยท๐ฑยท ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฝ๐น๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐บ๐๐ (Marikreita ยทbยท Danimarkลs). Translation, based on ๐ผ๐ฐ๐๐น๐บ๐๐ด๐น๐๐ฟ๐ (marikreitus), from ฮผฮฑฯฮณแพฐฯแฟฬฯฮทฯ (margฤrฤซฬtฤs) which is also the origin of the female given name.
* Recep Tayyip Erdoฤan โ ๐๐ฐ๐น๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ๐น๐๐ ๐๐ฐ๐พ๐น๐๐ ๐ฐ๐น๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ (Raรญdzaรญps Tajips Aรญrdaรบgans). Transcription. Surname alternatively ๐ฐ๐น๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฝ (Aรญrdaรบan) for more precise pronunciation, but it is uncommon in other languages to drop the โจgโฉ.
* Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands โ ๐
๐น๐ป๐พ๐ฐ๐ท๐น๐ป๐ผ๐-๐ฐ๐ป๐ฐ๐น๐บ๐๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ณ๐๐ฟ๐ ๐ฝ๐น๐ธ๐๐ฐ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ณ๐ด (Wiljahilms-Alaรญksandrus Niรพralandฤ). Translation.

==Names of places==
* Berlin โ ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐น๐๐ป๐ด๐น๐ฝ (Baรญrlein) ''n''. Transcription.
* Brasil, Brazil โ ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐ถ๐ด๐น๐ป๐พ๐ฐ (Brazeilja) ''f''. Adaptation based on Brazilian Portuguese ''Brasil'' [bษพaหziสฬฏ] and Latin ''Brasilia'', as well as a few other languages that use the same name for the capital (Brasรญlia) and the country.
* Carolina โ ๐บ๐ฐ๐๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ป๐ด๐น๐ฝ๐ฐ (Karaรบleina) ''f''. Transcription based on spelling, as well as other languages where native pronunciations are favoured above {{IPA|/หkรฆษนษหlaษชnษ/}}. An actual translation might however be ''Karileina'', from the feminine of ''karileins'' (of or pertaining to Karils/Karila), equivalent of Lat. ''carolฤซnus''. This would seem somewhat strange though, as it would suggest other similar translations, like German ''*Karlene'' or Icelandic ''*Karlin''.
* ฤeskรก republika, Czech Republic โ ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐พ๐ฐ๐ท๐ฐ๐น๐ผ๐ (Bajahรกims) ''m''. Translation, based on the old Germanic name for the region ฤechy, ''*Bajahaimaz'', which have also given rise to German ''Bรถhmen'' and English ''Bohemia''.
* Fรธroyar, Faroe Islands โ ๐๐ฐ๐ท๐น๐๐ฐ๐ฟ๐พ๐๐ (Fahisรกujลs) ''f pl''. Translation, based on PGer. ''*fahaz'' and ''*awjล''. ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐พ๐ฐ (รกuja) may have been a word in Gothic, although unattested, but ๐๐ฐ๐ท๐น๐ (fahis) is more uncertain. The form, however, is likely to have become this, based on other neuter z-stems like PGer. ''*rekwaz'' and ''*agaz'' โ ๐๐น๐ต๐น๐ (riqis) and ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐น๐ (agis).
* Gรถteborg, Gothenburg โ ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐ฒ๐ (Gรกutabaรบrgs) ''f''. Translation.
* Latvija, Latvia โ ๐ป๐ฐ๐๐ฐ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ณ (Lataland) ''n''. Semi-translation or adaptation of the native name, inspired by other Germanic names such as ''Lettland'', however without the i-umlaut. ''Latvija'' itself might come derive from ''*Latuva'', from the river name ''*Lata'' + ''-uva'' (region). This gave rise to the demonym ''latvis'', and from that ''Latvija''.
* Mรฉxico, Mฤxihco, Mexico โ ๐ผ๐ฐ๐น๐บ๐๐น๐บ๐ (Maรญksikล) ''f''. Transcription of the common pronunciation with {{IPA|/ks/}}, seen across the majority of languages. Otherwise ๐ผ๐ด๐๐น๐ท๐บ๐ (Mฤsihkล) or ๐ผ๐ฐ๐น๐๐น๐บ๐ (Maรญxikล) after the Nahuatl and Spanish pronunciations.
* Noreg, Norway โ ๐ฝ๐ฐ๐ฟ๐๐ณ๐๐ฐ๐
๐น๐ฒ๐ (Naรบrรพrawigs) ''m''. Translation based on various old forms in other languages, such as Old English ''Norรฐweg''. However, the Norwegian form has never been attested with the expected ''-รฐ-'' (''*Norรฐvegr''), and there are theories of it coming from ''Nรณrvegr'' instead (long {{IPA|/o:/}} is attested), from PGer. ''*nลrฤ
'' (narrow strait or inlet), thus suggesting Proto Norse ''*Nลrawegaส'' and Gothic ๐ฝ๐๐๐ฐ๐
๐น๐ฒ๐ (Nลrawigs).
* Oslo โ ๐ฐ๐ฝ๐๐ฟ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ท๐ฐ (Ansulรกuha) ''f''. Translation based on Proto-Norse ''*Ansulauhu'', from ''*ansuz'' and ''*lauhล'' (alt. form of ''*lauhaz''). For more Norwegian names, see [[๐ฝ๐น๐ฟ๐๐ฐ๐ฝ๐ณ๐:Eiliv/Norwegian place names|Norwegian place names]].
* Paris โ ๐๐ฐ๐๐ด๐น๐ (Pareis) ''m''. Transcription with some adaptation due to the similarity with native ja-stems nouns. For the long vowel, compare German ''Pareis'' and Dutch ''Parijs''.
* Stockholm โ ๐๐๐ฟ๐บ๐บ๐ฐ๐ท๐ฟ๐ป๐ผ๐ (Stukkahulms) ''m''. Translation.
* Venezuela โ ๐ฑ๐ฐ๐น๐ฝ๐ฐ๐น๐๐
๐ด๐ป๐ฐ (Baรญnaรญswฤla) ''f''. Transcription of the local Venezuelan Spanish pronunciation {{IPA|[be.neหswe.la]}}.
* Virginia โ ๐ฑ๐น๐๐ฒ๐ด๐น๐ฝ๐พ๐ฐ (Birgeinja) ''f''. Transcription with some adaptations. Alternatively ๐
๐น๐๐ฒ๐ด๐น๐ฝ๐พ๐ฐ (Wirgeinja) due to the 1:1 relationship between Latin {{IPA|/v/}} and Gothic {{IPA|/w/}}.
