:{{ping|MMiller (WMF)}} yes, initially in English, but I think that I can make Spanish translations with a small to moderate amount of assistance from a native Spanish speaker. There is enough variation in how Wikipedia language editions operate that I need to be careful not to assume that a video that is designed for ENWP can be translated for a different language edition of Wikipedia without taking into account variations in policies and workflows. 

:Please note that this project's viability is in question largely becsuse the work is surprisingly time intensive and there is currently no funding to support paid time for it, but I want this project to succeed and the community has previously expressed support for it, including for translations. I am hoping eventually to get non-WMF funding for this project but that is likely to be difficult. (WMF has previously provided grant funding but I have repeatedly underestimated how much time and budget is required for this project. I have concerns about conflict of interest if I accept WMF funds because of many past conflicts between the community and WMF, including this year's clash on ENWP regarding governance matters.) In the meantime, this is a volunteer effort for me. If you are starting with scripts that someone else has already created and that you think are good for what you want to do, that will save a lot of effort. You can consider starting with scripts that have already been created in another language and then translating them into Punjabi, and making any adaptations that are necessary due to differences in procedures between Wikipedias. Another option is to take existing finished videos and simply add Punjabi subtitles, which probably would require the least amount of effort. You could also start from scratch, which would give you and your students the most experience but also requires the most effort. I suggest that you look at [[NavWiki/External Resources]] and see if any of the resources give you ideas, or are scripts or finished videos that you could adapt for Punjabi. In our [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Newsletters/12|previous newsletter]], we talked about the productive edits coming from the [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Personalized first day/Newcomer tasks|newcomer tasks]] feature.  Those good results have continued: about 900 newcomers made over 5,000 suggested edits so far.  We've learned that newcomers are interested in receiving suggested edits. 

Now, we are thinking about how to supply them a feed of easy edits that will help more of them be successful quickly.  We have a new idea called &quot;[[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Personalized first day/Structured tasks|structured tasks]]&quot;. This would aim to break down edits into steps that are easy for newcomers and easy on mobile devices.

In the past, certain kinds of editing tasks have been structured. For instance, adding categories through HotCat.  Now, we are thinking about how to structure the editing of articles. The goal is to allow newcomers can make large content additions, especially from their mobile devices.

* More than &lt;strong&gt;2 million new articles&lt;/strong&gt; have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
* The visual editor is &lt;strong&gt;increasingly popular&lt;/strong&gt;.  The proportion of all edits made using the visual editor has increased every year since its introduction.
* In 2019, &lt;strong&gt;35% of the edits by newcomers&lt;/strong&gt; (logged-in editors with ≤99 edits) used the visual editor. This percentage has &lt;strong&gt;increased every year&lt;/strong&gt;.

We deployed the [[mw:Growth/Personalized first day/Newcomer tasks#Version 1.2: guidance|&quot;Guidance&quot; feature]] on June 15.

This feature uses the help panel to explain what to do after selecting a suggested edit. For instance, if a newcomer selects a copyedit task, they are guided on what sorts of errors to look for. They can see examples of how to rewrite the text. You can try this feature on [https://test.wikipedia.org test.wikipedia.org]. First enable the homepage and the help panel in your preferences there.

Since we launched &quot;Guidance&quot;, the data we collected show good results (see image). Now, we see more users completing suggested edits than before Guidance was deployed.

After about 5 weeks, we will analyze the data from the tests.
The goal is to determine which variant is helping more newcomers to make more suggested edits.
We will identify the better variant and then use it with all newcomers.

After six months, we collected data from Arabic, Vietnamese, Czech, and Korean Wikipedias. We analyzed the overall impact of the Growth features, including newcomer tasks.

This analysis finds that the Growth features lead to increases in:
* the probability that newcomers make their first article edit (+11.6%)
* the probability that they are retained as editors
* the number of edits they make during their first couple of weeks on the wiki (+22%)
We also find that the quality of their edits, as measured by revert rate, is comparable to that of a control group.

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of [[mw:Talk pages project/Replying|the Reply Tool]].  The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped [[mw:Talk pages project/Glossary|newer editors]] communicate on wiki.  The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

* Newer editors who had automatic (&quot;default on&quot;) access to the Reply tool were [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ more likely] to post a comment on a talk page.
* The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ less likely] to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

&lt;strong&gt;Looking ahead&lt;/strong&gt;

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months.  This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to [[phab:T280599|resolve a technical challenge]]. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the [[phab:T267379|Wikipedias that participated in the study]].  After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

The Growth team provides dedicated features to establish a [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Communities/How to configure the mentors' list|mentorship program]] for newcomers. Every newcomer gets a volunteer mentor who provides encouragement and answers questions.  Communities can set up or join this mentorship system by visiting Special:ManageMentors. This mentorship system is configurable by the community at Special:EditGrowthConfig.  

More communities have implemented mentorship. A Wikimedia Foundation data scientist will be looking at the impact of Mentorship. We will look at the impact on Spanish and English Wikipedia. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T341387]

Growth features are currently configurable at &lt;code&gt;Special:EditGrowthConfig&lt;/code&gt;. This quarter we are working on making [[mw:special:MyLanguage/Community configuration|Community Configuration]] accessible for other MediaWiki developers while also moving Growth feature configuration to the new CommunityConfiguration extension.

An early version of Community Configuration can be tested at [https://es.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Especial:CommunityConfiguration Spanish Beta Wikipedia]. Several [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Contributors/Account Creation Experiments|experiments to increase successful account creation]] have delivered significant results.

* An updated message shown to logged-out mobile users who try to edit produced a 27% relative increase in account creation and is being scaled to all wikis. ([[phab:T424595|T424595]])
* A new account menu button in the mobile web header, [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Contributors/Account Creation Experiments#Experiment Results: Mobile Web Account Menu|A/B tested across five Wikipedias with nearly 8 million participants]], made logged-out mobile users 25% more likely to create an account, with no significant difference in constructive editing behavior. *A simpler post-edit dialog for temporary account holders increased permanent account creation by 87% (relative), converting more temp editors into registered ones. ====Revise Tone structured task====
[[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Revise Tone|Revise Tone]] helps newcomers identify passages that may contain non-encyclopedic language and guides them through revising the tone.
In A/B testing on Arabic, English, French, and Portuguese Wikipedias, newcomer task completion rates were [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Growth/Revise Tone#Experiment Results|38.7% higher]] than the default Copyedit task, with no decrease in edit quality.
The test ended July 9, and the feature is now available to everyone on these wikis, configurable via Community Configuration.
[[phab:T426364|We plan]] to release Revise Tone to more wikis.

====Automated mentor list cleanup====
Communities can now [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:Growth/Mentorship#Automated mentor list cleanup|automatically mark inactive mentors as ''away'' or remove them from mentorship entirely]] (which automatically reassigns their mentees).
Inactivity is based on edits, and talk page responses count, so mentors answering mentee questions remain active.
We recommend enabling both options together; administrators can enable them via [[Special:CommunityConfiguration]] and review the mentor list at [[Special:ManageMentors]].

Rather than remaining a newcomer-only feature, Home will evolve with users as they gain experience, surfacing Suggested Edits, edits to review, and moderation workflows at the right moment.
