I encourage you to pursue that interest in writing a Sami grammar. All dialects of that group are endangered. You're probably familiar with Volapük, which is a constructed language that was developed a century ago. It never gained the popularity of Esperanto and Interlingua. It amazes me that the Volapük Wikipedia has, to date, 118,795 articles, yet there are only 20 active speakers in the world. 118,795 articles is a lot of reading for 20 speakers (well, if you also want to include the 200 Volapük Yahoo group members). Sami is a living language and needs to be preserved so that it can continue for years to come. Sub note: I listen to Swedish Radio all the time over the Internet and it just amazes me how Swedes pepper their Swedish with English. They never did that years ago when I lived there. I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide [[mw:SUL finalisation|single-user login finalisation]] (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at [[m:Global rename policy|the global rename policy]], a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects. 

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed. 

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called [[m:Global renamers|Global renamers]]. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the [[m:SRGP|requests for global permissions]] page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to [[:m:SRUC|the request page for a global rename]].

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

The English Wikipedia was launched on the 15th of January, 2001. The theme of the 20-year celebration is celebrating the people behind Wikipedia – all of you who have contributed in some way to make us able to celebrate 20 years of free knowledge. Due to the pandemic, we can't celebrate in-person at the moment, but we hope to be able to organize a celebration within the year.

;Events to look forward to in 2021
* Wikimedia Norge's general assembly will be held on the 6th of March. It will be held entirely online this year, just like last year. More information coming soon.
* We are planning a digital administrator meet-up for all administrators in the Wikipedias in Norwegian Bokmål and Nynorsk, probably in March. If you are interested in helping organize this, please contact [[Special:EmailUser/Jon Harald Søby (WMNO)|Jon Harald]].
* Arctic Art+Feminism: We will organize four editathons during 2021, where the theme is female artists and indigenous art. More information coming soon.
* [[m:WikiGap|WikiGap]]: If the pandemic allows, there will be a WikiGap event at the Swedish Embassy in Oslo. We hope to see you there! This year's theme is female activists from South America.

;General assembly
:This year's general assembly was held on March 6th, and the minutes [[wmno:Årsmøte 2021/Protokoll|are available here]]. Amongst other things, it was decided to give Wikimedia Norge an official name in Southern Sámi, Lule Sámi and Kven. That means that we now have 6 official names: Wikimedia Norge (Norwegian Bokmål), Wikimedia Noreg (Norwegian Nynorsk), Wikimedia Norga (Northern Sámi), Wikimedia Vuodna (Lule Sámi), Wikimedia Nöörje (Southern Sámi) and Wikimedia Norja (Kven).

;New board
:Hogne Neteland exited the board after many years of service, we would like to thank him for his efforts! Sigrun Espe continues as board chair. The board has two new board members:
:* Fredrik Ljone, Bergen. Board member, elected for the 2021–2023 term. Ljone is dedicated to sharing knowledge, open data and rule of law. He has taken the initiative to make the law more accessible for everyone through jusleksikon.no and rettspraksis.no.
:* Stian Amadeus Antonsen, Oslo. Deputy board member, elected for the 2021–2022 term. Antonsen has a lot of experience from different civil society organizations, and works as a political advisor in the Norwegian Students' and Academics' International Assistance Fund (SAIH). He is dedicated to diversity and inclusion, and wants everyone to be able to share in the production and dissemination of knowledge.

;Arctic Knot
:On June 24–25, Wikimedia Norge will organize the digital ''[[m:Arctic Knot Conference 2021|Arctic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference]]''.
:Wikipedia is a cornerstone of the digital age, but the knowledge you'll find isn't evenly distributed across languages. The Wikimedia movement is about to implement its 2030 strategy, while UNESCO is working on the ''[https://en.unesco.org/news/upcoming-decade-indigenous-languages-2022-2032-focus-indigenous-language-users-human-rights International Decade of Indigenous Languages]'' (IDIL), which starts in 2022. IDIL shows the potential that technology has in supporting and maintaining indigenous languages. These milestones form a frame for the conference, where we will discuss linguistic diversity in the Wikimedia projects, and how to build good linguistic environments for the users of indigenous and underrepresented language communities.
:Arctic Knot is a conference for all Wikipedians and Wikimedians who are interested in indigenous languages, and also for organizations and institutions working in this field. ;Administrator meetup
:On Saturday, March 20, we held a [[w:no:Wikipedia:Wikitreff#Admintreff 20. mars|administrator meetup]] for the Norwegian-language Wikimedia projects. There were 10 participants, of which one is a Wiktionary administrator, and the rest are administrators on the Norwegian Bokmål Wikipedia. The meetup was initiated by Wikimedia Norge on request from the community.
:During the meetup there was a walkthrough of &quot;hidden&quot; or little-known administrator tools, like mass deletion, new blocking options and patrolling tools. There was also broad agreement that there is a need to update and centralize rules and guidelines on-wiki.

;Wikimedia Enterprise
:With its new project ''[[m:Wikimedia Enterprise|Wikimedia Enterprise]]'', the Wikimedia Foundation is working on a way to cooperate with commercial actors like Google and Amazon. A lot of commercial actors are already using Wikimedia content, but without any formal agreements or financial compensation. Wikimedia Enterprise is meant to be a service that will improve the user experience of Wikimedia outside of the Wikimedia platforms, and also be financially self-sustaining.

;Giellavahkku and Sámi work
:Maybe you've been wondering why there's been so much Sámi stuff in social media lately? The reason is the Sámi language week, Giellavahkku, which aims to make the Sámi languages more visible. The Sámi languages, culture and history are an important part of the diversity of knowledge. We have summarized the work we're doing with regards to Sámi languages in [https://www.wikimedia.no/2021/10/25/giellavahkku-samisk-sprakuke/ this blog post].
:[[w:en:Lapp Codicil of 1751|The Lapp Codicil]] was repatriated to the Sámi Archives this month, after a long process. The Lapp Codicil is still the base of the laws for borders in the North of Scandinavia. It will soon also be available on Wikimedia Commons.

;Queer culture year 2022
:Througout 2022, the queer culture year (''Skeivt kulturår'') will be marked in Norway. In preparation for this, we have uploaded [[c:Category:Interview videos by Skeivt arkiv|139 interviews by the Queer Archive]] to Wikimedia Commons. We also have several other projects planned for next year. 
:– The fact that queer experiences, history and culture aren't reflected online is a blank spot in our common history, says Heide Rohde Rafto, acting academic director of the Queer Archive of Norway. She adds that queer history is not only the history of LGBT+ people, but of the whole of society.

In comparison, the next encyclopedia on the list, Store norske leksikon, had 112 million pageviews. The numbers speak for themselves: Wikipedia is where people go to learn.

The [[m:Special:MyLanguage/Universal_Code_of_Conduct/Coordinating_Committee|Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C)]] seeks candidates for the 2026 election. The U4C is the global committee responsible for overseeing enforcement of the [[foundation:Special:MyLanguage/Policy:Universal Code of Conduct|Universal Code of Conduct]]. Elections are held annually, if elected a committee member serves for two years.

This year the U4C requires candidates to hold administrator rights on at least one wiki, which is why you are being contacted as you appear to hold this right. There are other requirements, such as candidates must be at least 18 years old and may not be employed by the Wikimedia Foundation or other related chapters and affiliates. You can find more information in the [[m:Special:MyLanguage/Universal_Code_of_Conduct/Coordinating_Committee/Election/2026#Call_for_Candidates|call for candidates on Meta-wiki]]. Additionally, the committee's working language is English; some ability to communicate in English is required.

The election opens on 18 May, if you are eligible and interested you have until 10 May to submit your candidacy. There will be a week in between for candidates to answer questions from the community.
