== Bakgrund ==
Det har länge gått att ladda upp radioprogram på webben som en podcast. Men de senaste åren har det exploderat och blivit väldigt vanligt.&lt;ref&gt;[https://teknikveckan.se/sa-manga-lyssnar-pa-podcasts-i-sverige Så många lyssnar på podcasts i Sverige] Besökt: 20140904&lt;/ref&gt; Många laddar ned poddar till mobilen och lyssnar när de pendlar, diskar eller tränar. Sändningarna är ett sätt att nå ut med nyheter till föreningens medlemmar, gemenskapen och andra intresserade.

== Avsnitt ==
Vi har som mål att publicera ett varje vecka och hålla det runt 30 minuter. 

De första två säsongerna hade varje avsnitt ett tema. Från och med säsong 3 ändrades formatet till fasta programpunkter. Säsong 4 startade i slutet av maj 2019, och det är året när Wikimedia Sverige är värd för Wikimania. Det är en av anledningarna till att podden återupptogs och var en fast punkt i återuppstarten var Wikimania i varje avsnitt. För närvarande är de fasta programpunkterna:

= CommonsDB at the Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe =

A rainy weekend in March, about 80 people gathered in Arnhem, the Netherlands for the [[mw:Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026|Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026]]. I came there with the hopes of getting some input on how CommonsDB could best be put to use in our projects, socialize our progress, and, of course, do a bit of hacking and improve our prototype.

Even early in the first day when I showed that [[c:User:Sebastian Berlin (WMSE)/js/isccUpload.js|an initial prototype]], built by [[m:User:Sebastian Berlin (WMSE)|Sebastian Berlin]], developer at Wikimedia Sverige, can help you check if an image you are about to upload already is declared in CommonsDB, I saw people getting the potential. Since CommonsDB is a registry for public domain and openly licensed works, it can give assurance to the uploader that they are doing the right thing. However, the prototype in the state of the start of the hackathon required some clicks and weren't making use of the CommonsDB search API. My mission was to make progress in that area.

== The technical work ==
The starting point was a user script that submits the image to a service that generates a code, the International Standard Content Code or ISCC for short. In the interface, it also gave you a link to the [https://registry.commonsdb.org/explorer CommonsDB Explorer] with the generated ISCC, so that you can click through and see if the image was already declared. For example, it could be a link like this one: https://registry.commonsdb.org/explorer/KEC6SZK633OFYX5YSBRWGPNMK3M7AAWE6AGBUYQPMSLOMFE22TJJ5AA
That lets you look in the registry and see if there are any matches and find the link to the source if you want to explore more.

So far, so good. But it requires some manual work which we, thanks to the [https://docs.commonsdb.org/search-api/search CommonsDB search API] can reduce. My improvement during the hackathon was to use this API to get some answers in JSON format instead. For original images and images not declared in CommonsDB yet, it would just say that there was no match and would let the user just continue as per usual. If there was a match the script then looks at the answer and looks at who is the source of the image in CommonsDB. If the source is not Wikimedia, it then shows which license the image has and who made that claim with a direct link to the original source. The user is then helped for the next step when selecting the license and can also investigate if the image looks curious for some reason.

If the results include a match with Wikimedia as source, information is shown to the user that there is already a similar match on Wikimedia Commons, including a thumbnail and a link. The user can then decide if they still want to upload a new version or not. Since the perceptual search can find a match even for an image it would, for example, likely show a match for an image that have had digital restoration work or similar, which are appropriate new uploads.

In the movie below, we see two use cases. The first is an upload of an image from Europeana that is in CommonsDB. The user gets a link and click through and see that it looks correct if they didn't already know that this was the source. In the second one, a user starts an upload of a heavily downscaled version of an image that was declared by Wikimedia Sverige in CommonsDB. The user then gets information and a thumbnail and gets to decide what to do. (In this case, hopefully cancel the upload.)

== How could this look like in the future? ==
There's still a lot of work to do, both when it comes to the visual design and covering corner cases, how to show this when doing multiple uploads or what to do if there are multiple matches in the register. But the basic workflow would be similar but even more smooth for the user. If there is no match for example, there is not really a reason to show anything for the user.

When there is a match, in addition to showing the license, it would be neat to also make a suggestion for what license template to use making it much easier for the user to get it right.

Some feedback received during the hackathon was to also log when the user made another choice than the suggestion. This could be used to either see if the user made an error or a judgment call that another rights statement was more appropriate for Wikimedia Commons.

Currently, this is a user script, and it could perhaps be created as a gadget. But even better would be to integrate it even deeper, perhaps as an extension, together with a Wikimedia-hosted ISCC-code generating service. This would reduce the time it takes to get the code significantly.

== Finding a new use case ==
While we have some [[m:CommonsDB/Potential for the communities|listing of potentials at Meta]], and some other [[Projekt:CommonsDB registry/Implementation|implementation ideas]], during the hackathon we also heard about another use case from Wikimedia Ukraine and Wiki Loves Monuments. They would benefit from a tool where users upload many similar images shot in &quot;burst mode&quot;, meaning that are not exactly identical, but often strikingly similar. Experiments with a couple of example images verified that such images could indeed be identified through the perceptual hash ISCC provides. While we already envisioned a tool that could compare existing images on Commons, this showed that there are more cases for potential &quot;duplicates&quot; to be found. 

== Other related development at the hackathon ==
CommonsDB also supports a declaration to provide an argument of why an image is in the public domain, they call this ''PD rationale''. Thanks to the ground laying work by [[Toolforge:Paulina|Paulina]] and others, using Wikidata as the identifier for these statements has been the choice of CommonsDB as well.

During the hackathon, a group of people were making progress on how to model copyright statements in the structured data on Commons. When implemented on scale, this will provide a great way for us to submit those as the PD rationales to CommonsDB.

For now, there are a lot of templates on Wikimedia Commons giving this information for an image. This is great for a human, but it could be more accessible for machines. Currently we are mapping license templates towards Wikidata items about public domain reasons so that we can already use this in our declarations. It might also be useful for adding this information to the structured data on Commons in bulk. [[Projekt:CommonsDB registry/Mallmappning|You can help by mapping more templates]].

== What's happening next in the project? ==
We are continuing to declare files from Wikimedia Commons to CommonsDB. We just passed the one million mark, and hopefully we will have declared several millions by the end of the project. Still a long way to go for all files on Commons, but a start large enough to show the value of a registry like this.

We'll also continue developing the prototype, to show the value for the community more clearly and possibly even have something useful for regular users. Not only will we be doing that work at home, we will also be at the hackathons in Milan and before Wikimania in Paris. Please talk to us if you are there and are curious or have ideas.

In parallel, we'll also try to make more demos for some of the other ideas that we have. If you come up with any new ideas for how either the CommonsDB registry or access to perceptual hashes to find similar images could help you as a Wikimedian, please let us know!

A hackathon is of course about meeting people and collaborating, not only stare at your own screen and only work on your own projects all the time. I was happy to be able to make myself useful for other participants as well. 

One of my favorite tools on Wikidata, [[d:Template:Property dashboard|Integraality / Property dashboard]], needed some input for how it is being used in practice and the maintainer [[d:User:Jean-Frédéric|Jean-Frédéric]] interviewed me as user research. 

[[Commons:User:Spinster|User:Spinster]] had some ideas about data sets and Wikidata and we also had a great conversation about what could be done, perhaps notably in terms of outreach.

[[w:nl:Gebruiker:ItsNyoty|User:ItsNyoty]] wanted to add an image blurring filter for sensitive images as a gadget, and I had just seen one being deployed on Swedish Wikipedia only hours earlier and I could connect them. This turned into a crosswiki collaboration with people not even at the hackathon and Dutch Wikipedia getting an advanced version deployed quickly.

Since I love hackathons, and this was a well-organized one, I also took the chance to record [https://wikipediapodden.se/northwestern-europe-hackathon-358/ a podcast episode] ([[:File:WP358 - Northwestern Europe Hackathon.mp3|also on Commons]]) with two of the organizers with the hope of inspiring more people to run local and regional hackathons.

Welcome to Wikipediapodden. My name is Jan Ainali and today I am at the Wikimedia Deutschland office and with me I have Martyn Ranyard who is the Engineering manager for Wikibase Cloud. Welcome to the podcast.

Thank you for having me.

So usually our listeners I think they're mostly Wikipedians but I think a lot of them also know about Wikidata. But what is Wikibase?

So Wikibase is the software that runs underneath Wikidata. So the software that runs Wikidata is Wikibase.

All right, that is like an extension to the MediaWiki software?

Yes it is, yes. It's built in the same ecosystem, it was built here in Berlin office.

Then what is Wikibase Cloud?

So Wikibase Cloud is a way for people to run their own instances of effectively Wikidata, Wikibase as it is, in a way that they don't have to have any technical knowledge. You can think of it as Wikibase as a service or Wikidata as a service and it's really useful for people who want to run data. There's kind of three use cases. One is preparing data for Wikibase, another is if you have some data that might not be accepted by the moderation team of Wikidata but you still want to collect that data somewhere and publish it and remix it and reuse it elsewhere. Or it's also really useful for people building tools or trying out how Wikidata works but in an isolated way so you don't have to be scared of breaking Wikidata.

Can anyone get in on this?

Yes, at the moment we're just working on the hosting policies. It's still a beta product so it's constantly evolving. We intend it to be there for some good time so don't be worried about the beta tag but we're making sure that the offering is working for everyone. But yes, anyone can sign up for Wikibase Cloud and then create their own Wikibase. What we're looking at at the minute, as a spoiler, is that if you don't request it to be permanent then it will be a temporary instance for you to play around with and if you stop using it for some amount of time, I believe that's still being worked on as to what that is, then you'll be notified and it will be closed down neatly because otherwise people would just spin them up and leave them to bit rot. Then there'd be a process for making sure it stays permanently for the kinds of data that are more permanent that we also support.

So it doesn't necessarily need to be something that's Wikimedia related, the data that you put it, but it could be.

Indeed, there is a lot of different Wikibases out there. There is a Star Trek one, for instance, that has loads of data about the different ships in Star Trek which, you know, might not be as interesting to lots of Wikidata people. I know there's a few minority language Wikibases out there on Wikibase Cloud. Yeah, so it's really very mixed and can be for any kind of data. We're still looking at what kinds of data we want to host. We're especially interested in holders of sort of knowledge that is in minority, for instance, so we're really interested in supporting those and getting that knowledge equity in that. So it's very varied data. Some of it is exactly just let's not have this in Wikidata, some of it is just a different form of the same data that's in Wikidata, and some of it is, yeah, this isn't ever going to be in Wikidata, but we'd like to host it somewhere and it's knowledge and free knowledge is super important. Yeah.

I once set up a MediaWiki instance on my own server and it's very blank and empty if you're coming in at it as a Wikimedian. When you're starting a Wikibase Cloud, what can you sort of expect it to be in terms of things that you might be used as a Wikidata editor?

Yeah, a similar kind of experience to be honest. You set up a Wikibase Cloud and it's fairly empty and it looks like just MediaWiki that's empty, but with the Wikidata theme to it, the extensions in there, and this is something that we're currently actually looking at as the user journeys is, okay, if you're starting a Wikibase, we were talking about this in the team actually, that there's a few tools out there on the internet for generating data, but they might not be useful for your use case, so creating something that already has data there for you to play with is something that I think we potentially going to look at in future, but it's very difficult for us to choose what data to put there because, yeah, you might want lots of data with lots of fields, or you might want just a little data with lots of fields, or you might want a lot of data with not many fields, so it's like very kind of interesting as to choosing that example data. Like I say, there are tools out there for getting data in, for generating data, and also there's a tool for exporting data from Wikidata into a Wikibase Cloud, so you can do that and have work on the data that you're used to if you want to see how it would look
in a different form.

And of course one of the most fun things with Wikidata is that you can make queries. Is that also available in the Wikibase Cloud?

Yes, yes, the query editor is there. We're looking at how it can be used, how it can be
embedded. There's always visualizations which are really fun, and some of the Wikibases have lots of visualizations on which are really cool. It's always fun to click through our list of what's out there and, yeah, see all these interesting ways that people are using the data. It's super cool.

Is there also some way to sort of reuse some of the work already being done in Wikidata within an instance?

So as linked open data you can always link data, so that there is always the opportunity to link the upstream data, or you can, as I say, import from Wikidata into your Wikibase. We've recently upgraded actually to the more recent version of MediaWiki, so we now support the MUL language code, which is a very strange thing, brand new to the organization myself. I've been here nearly three months now, but the idea of the MUL language code kind of took me some time to get my head round.

Do you want to explain what it is? Because I don't think... 

Gosh, I can try. So the MUL language code is a way of saying that this piece of data is the same in multiple languages, so you don't have to translate it into every language, and then there's like a fallback list of languages. So like to use the Star Trek thing, the name Enterprise would be the same because it's a name in all of the languages. So rather than having Enterprise in English, Enterprise in Spanish, Enterprise in German, you would just say Enterprise MUL and that would then be there in all the languages. And that's a fairly recent thing that the Wikipedia community has started using, but it was in Wikidata and that made importing data into Wikibase Cloud difficult because we didn't have it, but that's a recent improvement that we've just made that the Wikibase Cloud now supports the MUL language code.

And I think it might show in the Wikidata interface as default language, I think it says.

I think so, yeah. You possibly know more than me on this one, but yes, it's something I'm still getting my head around, but it's something that's been fun to my mind.

Talking about the queries, is it also possible to query across using data in a Wikibase Cloud and Wikidata?

Yes, you can indeed query across Cloud and Wikidata. It can be a little bit tricky and the Wikibase teams are working on something to make it easier called Ontology Federation, but for instance you can have the Wikidata QID in your Wikibase and then call the Wikidata query service from within your Wikibase sparkle and enrich your data. So for example, you could have a sparse record and not store your geolocation data in your Wikibase and pull that geolocation data from Wikidata.

I'm thinking about if you have seen something cool where some people are using Wikibase Cloud and Wikimedia projects somehow in a cool way or maybe even have you already seen emerging patterns of best practices of yes this is how you go about doing stuff?

I think the one that I saw recently was the memory, the Star Trek one, because memory alpha is the media wiki that runs the wiki and then memory oh memory I'd have to look it up but the the Wikibase Cloud behind it has the the data panels for the the info boxes in the Wikimedia instance and that's very separate from Wikipedia itself but it is a MediaWiki instance that is backed by a Wikibase Cloud so the two are sort of interlinked in the same way that Wikipedia links to Wikidata so it's really good for those kinds of things. I know that also there's people using Wikibase Cloud as a teaching tool so in universities and basically setting up a Wikibase Cloud for their students to learn how Wikidata works and that's really cool and they're gonna be able to take advantage of the new GraphQL stuff as well that's just come down the line which is a really interesting thing from one of the other teams.

What is coming next? What are you working on that you're exciting to launch in the coming year?

Yeah so we're looking at this whole permanence thing because like I say we have quite a few older unmaintained Wikibases that are there and that cleanup should be done because people have been testing things and leaving them there because there's no cost to them and they're kind of is to Wikimedia at that point so yeah we want to clean those up and we want to make it really clear how to have that distinction between the permanent and the temporary instances. Then we're also working on this knowledge equity stuff on understanding how we help people come to Wikibase who have knowledge that isn't represented elsewhere and getting that knowledge into a digital form. So expect some surveys in the signup flow and things like that and then yeah making sure that we have feature parity
with Wikidata. Because we have this first level of Wikibase there with some extensions but installing extensions isn't something that we're giving ability to do because the way we run it is we run it in a special way that saves us having a lot of cost from the compute but that makes installing extensions individually impossible. So we're wanting to make sure that we have the right set of extensions for the people who need them. So yeah, those kinds of things. We want to bring the new mobile editing experience, that's coming, that's we want to bring that to cloud as well that's coming down the line and yeah some of the gadgets as well. But again more difficult to install because it's done in that special way yeah.

All right is there something that you were excited to tell me that I didn't ask about?

Hmm I don't think so I think it's really mainly I guess I'm excited to be here personally because I'm a real open source fanboy and running all of this stuff and helping people get their data online who can't necessarily run their own MediaWiki instance whether that be an enterprise that isn't allowed to run something that's on the internet or whether it be an individual who just has this huge database that they want to put online for anybody to access I think it's really really cool and that's I guess yeah where I'm coming from yeah.
