N'për ograjë po këndojnë bylbylat
si tu u prrallë me shoqi-shojnë,
drandafilleve zymbylat
t'kandshmen erë dhunti ia çojnë.
E nalt n'qiell ma e bukur hana

Lodhë prej vegësh, prej rrangësh shpijet,

E kuvendte me nanë-locen
si përgjumshëm, ndonji fjalë,
derisa bri votrës gocën
e muer gjumi dalkadalë.
Fjet bri votrës: e kur shkëndija
shndritte at fëtyr' të patravajë,
ejëll prej qiellit ulet te shpia
dukej faret fëtyra e sajë.
Herë n'at' gjumë tue qeshun dukej,
si m'u falë herë dorën çote;
herë përmallshem n'veti strukej
e n'fëtyrë gjaku t'tan' i vëlote.
(Ngrimun n'ar, mbi 'i pullali
nën balkue nji beg kish dalë;
holl' e i gjatë porsi selvi
n'rrugë nën gardh ish dukë nji djalë.)
E nan-bardha tue shikjue:
"Flej me engjuj, thotë, o bi;
pusho shtatin me i ndihmue
Lokes sate nëpër shpi".
'''II'''
Prej nën nji tjegllet kish dalë si 'j tra,
ku nji mij' tesha vëloshin pa da;
përmbi shpi ndihej tue rrahun troka
e ushtonte toka
prej kambësh t'bag'tive. Ka dalë Harapi
herët, e shpatit delet ja hapi;
ka dalun Mica me lopë të mëdhaja
nëpër ograja.
Kur u zgjue Zoga vojt te balkoni
e pau se bleta vëlonte te zgjoni;
pau se n'at' nade poshtë nji lavruer
kish ba nji shpuer.
Tue sjellun krahnin këndote me veti,
e i rridhte krahve si nji valë deti,
ku shndriçëm dielli lëshonte si zhgjeta
rrezet e veta.
Rreze flak' arit. Por rrotull fëtyra
e fushës kish nd'rrue; kish nd'rruemun zyra
e bimës e e pem've; përmbi balkue
deri kish nd'rrue
erë filcigeni; po vite 'j tjetër
erë: porsi makthit; e rruga e vjetër
nën shpi, mbas gardhit, porsi nji dritë
shkonte tue qitë.
Nuk e kish vrumun kurr nder dit' t'veta
at rrugë n'balkue. Ktheheshin me çeta
asaj katundsit, tue dalë pa pra
e ajo s'kish pa.
U nis te puna mërziçëm. Nisi
ndër penj sovajkën, e shpata krisi,
cirliknë rrotllat posht' e përpjetë
nën kambë të shpejtë.
E vojt n'dritare prap. Ndoshta begu
ka mbërri te rruga e pret te shtegu
veshun me t'arta, mbi 'j pullali
për bukuri.
Nuk ishte begu: nën diell t'valtë
veç dy dallëndysha bajshin do baltë,
balt' e kashtare për çerdhe t'vet,
se Shën Ejëlli a nget.
Ndoshta po avitet nji djal' i ri
i holl' e i gjatë porsi 'j selvi,
me rrip rreth brezit, me nji gjashtore
e 'j kacatore.
Nuk erdhi djali: veç dy bylbyla,
nji n'drandofille, nji ndër zymbyla,
përmallshëm thrrasin, e shoqi-shojnë
me kangë gazmojnë.
'''III'''
Vijnë dallëndyshat porsi era
përte' det te çerdhja e vet;
vijnë bylbylat ku pranvera
n'pyje t'veshuna po i thrret.
Se qe pemët kan' endun lulet,
e u vesh fusha me blerim;
lehtas prroni malit ulet
da prej borës që i nep ushqim.
E, i dish'ruem, bje për fushore
me rritë bimën për gjith' vend,
ku 'j erë akullit mizore
kishte hupë lul'zim e shend.
Edhe ti prej asaj që t'rriti
daju, vash', e mos vajto;
me nji veshë, që kurr s'ta shndriti
paras, shtatin hijesho.
Bashkë me lule len dashtnija,
me kangë t'shpendit që galdon;
e pranverës bukuria
bashkë prej gjumit t'tan' i zgjon.
Del, o bij', prej shpisë sate,
del prei t'vorfënit katund;
njajo flakë që n'zemër pate
do t'përvjellin tjetërkund.
T'pret nji zemër flak' e shkëndija,
pret me tanden m'u ba nji;
sa jetë t'apin Perëndia
mos m'u damun kurr prej 'si.
T'lypë nji bes' e ta nep t'ndershme
dora e unazaqë t'ven n'gisht;
e ndërmjet pr'at besë t'gjithhershme
a dorzan' i lumi Krisht.
Sogjetarë, porsi furia
e nji rrfes' që qetat shpon,
janë të qiellit nalt ushtria
e n'dorë shpata iu veton.
E din idhun regj Davidi,
e dinë lott që pa pra qet,
kur sheh morten se kositi
an' e mb'an krajlninë e vet.
'''IV'''
E kandshme asht hana
kur del me zana,
e n'tokë me dritë përndaret,
Hyjzit që shndrisin
e që shetisin
n'për qiell, jan' t'bukur faret.
Kur del agimi
e rruzullimi
me 'j dritë kuqloshe mbëlohet
e përmbi kashta
shndritë pika-lashta,
zemra për mall gazmohet.
Asht i madh shendi,
kur ndihet shpendi
ndër pyje tue pingrue;
e knaqshme a 'j lule
kur iu përkule,
o fllad i leht', me e l'mue.
Por s'i giet qielli,
nuk i giet prilli
as fllad që shetitë lulet
e me erna veshet,
foshnjës që i qeshet
nanës, kur mbi 'të përkulet.

e muer gjumi dalkadalë.
Fjet bri votrës: e kur shkëndija
shndritte at fëtyr' të patravajë,
ejëll prej qiellit ulet te shpia
dukej faret fëtyra e sajë.
Herë n'at' gjumë tue qeshun dukej,
si m'u falë herë dorën çote;
herë përmallshem n'veti strukej
e n'fëtyrë gjaku t'tan' i vëlote.
(Ngrimun n'ar, mbi 'i pullali
nën balkue nji beg kish dalë;
holl' e i gjatë porsi selvi
n'rrugë nën gardh ish dukë nji djalë.)
E nan-bardha tue shikjue:
"Flej me engjuj, thotë, o bi;
pusho shtatin me i ndihmue
Lokes sate nëpër shpi".
'''II'''
Prej nën nji tjegllet kish dalë si 'j tra,
ku nji mij' tesha vëloshin pa da;
përmbi shpi ndihej tue rrahun troka
e ushtonte toka
prej kambësh t'bag'tive. Ka dalë Harapi
herët, e shpatit delet ja hapi;
ka dalun Mica me lopë të mëdhaja
nëpër ograja.
Kur u zgjue Zoga vojt te balkoni
e pau se bleta vëlonte te zgjoni;
pau se n'at' nade poshtë nji lavruer
kish ba nji shpuer.
Tue sjellun krahnin këndote me veti,
e i rridhte krahve si nji valë deti,
ku shndriçëm dielli lëshonte si zhgjeta
rrezet e veta.
Rreze flak' arit. Por rrotull fëtyra
e fushës kish nd'rrue; kish nd'rruemun zyra
e bimës e e pem've; përmbi balkue
deri kish nd'rrue
erë filcigeni; po vite 'j tjetër
erë: porsi makthit; e rruga e vjetër
nën shpi, mbas gardhit, porsi nji dritë
shkonte tue qitë.
Nuk e kish vrumun kurr nder dit' t'veta
at rrugë n'balkue. Ktheheshin me çeta
asaj katundsit, tue dalë pa pra
e ajo s'kish pa.
U nis te puna mërziçëm. Nisi
ndër penj sovajkën, e shpata krisi,
cirliknë rrotllat posht' e përpjetë
nën kambë të shpejtë.
E vojt n'dritare prap. Ndoshta begu
ka mbërri te rruga e pret te shtegu
veshun me t'arta, mbi 'j pullali
për bukuri.
Nuk ishte begu: nën diell t'valtë
veç dy dallëndysha bajshin do baltë,
balt' e kashtare për çerdhe t'vet,
se Shën Ejëlli a nget.
Ndoshta po avitet nji djal' i ri
i holl' e i gjatë porsi 'j selvi,
me rrip rreth brezit, me nji gjashtore
e 'j kacatore.
Nuk erdhi djali: veç dy bylbyla,
nji n'drandofille, nji ndër zymbyla,
përmallshëm thrrasin, e shoqi-shojnë
me kangë gazmojnë.
'''III'''
Vijnë dallëndyshat porsi era
përte' det te çerdhja e vet;
vijnë bylbylat ku pranvera
n'pyje t'veshuna po i thrret.
Se qe pemët kan' endun lulet,
e u vesh fusha me blerim;
lehtas prroni malit ulet
da prej borës që i nep ushqim.
E, i dish'ruem, bje për fushore
me rritë bimën për gjith' vend,
ku 'j erë akullit mizore
kishte hupë lul'zim e shend.
Edhe ti prej asaj që t'rriti
daju, vash', e mos vajto;
me nji veshë, që kurr s'ta shndriti
paras, shtatin hijesho.
Bashkë me lule len dashtnija,
me kangë t'shpendit që galdon;
e pranverës bukuria
bashkë prej gjumit t'tan' i zgjon.
Del, o bij', prej shpisë sate,
del prei t'vorfënit katund;
njajo flakë që n'zemër pate
do t'përvjellin tjetërkund.
T'pret nji zemër flak' e shkëndija,
pret me tanden m'u ba nji;
sa jetë t'apin Perëndia
mos m'u damun kurr prej 'si.
T'lypë nji bes' e ta nep t'ndershme
dora e unazaqë t'ven n'gisht;
e ndërmjet pr'at besë t'gjithhershme
a dorzan' i lumi Krisht.
Sogjetarë, porsi furia
e nji rrfes' që qetat shpon,
janë të qiellit nalt ushtria
e n'dorë shpata iu veton.
E din idhun regj Davidi,
e dinë lott që pa pra qet,
kur sheh morten se kositi
an' e mb'an krajlninë e vet.
'''IV'''
E kandshme asht hana
kur del me zana,
e n'tokë me dritë përndaret,
Hyjzit që shndrisin
e që shetisin
n'për qiell, jan' t'bukur faret.
Kur del agimi
e rruzullimi
me 'j dritë kuqloshe mbëlohet
e përmbi kashta
shndritë pika-lashta,
zemra për mall gazmohet.
Asht i madh shendi,
kur ndihet shpendi
ndër pyje tue pingrue;
e knaqshme a 'j lule
kur iu përkule,
o fllad i leht', me e l'mue.
Por s'i giet qielli,
nuk i giet prilli
as fllad që shetitë lulet
e me erna veshet,
foshnjës që i qeshet
nanës, kur mbi 'të përkulet.

In bringing out this little book before the public, I beg to say that I have engaged in a work so arduous that I cannot profess to have successfully completed it, but, encouraged by the remembrance that not a few persons have undertaken work of a similar kind in other languages on a small scale at first, I did not shrink from making a like attempt myself. When the work had been finished, and part of it gone through the press, Sir Bampfylde Fuller kindly took notice of it, and at his instance a committee, composed of U Dohory Ropmay, {{sc|b.a.}}, U Hajom Kissor Singh, and myself, as members, was appointed for revising and enlarging it.
As the Cherra dialect has been selected and introduced by the Welsh Missionaries (and very wisely too) as a standard of the Khasi language, no attempt has been made to insert words of other dialects, excepting in a very few instances.
No pains have been spared to consult as many of the books and local newspapers available, as have been published up to date.
I have great pleasure in acknowledging my personal obligations to the Rev. J. C. Evans, to Major E. R. W. C. Carroll, {{sc|i.m.s.}}, and to Major P. R. T. Gurdon, {{sc|i.a.}}, for the kind and valuable assistance rendered by them. I must not omit to mention here my obligations to the members of the revising committee—U Dohory Ropmay, {{sc|b.a.}}, and U Hajom Kissor Singh—who have devoted much time and thought to the revision work, and to some of my Khasi friends from whom I derived assistance.
In conclusion, I beg to say that, with all that I and the members of the committee have done, there will still be room for further improvements as years pass. I am, however, satisfied that a foundation has been laid for any improvements that may be made in future.

This template inserts a "brace segment": part of a brace (curly bracket) that can be put into a table to span multiple items.
== Usage ==
* Parameter 1 determines the orientation of the brace: l (left - {{ ), r (right - }} ), o (over) or u (under).
* Parameter 2 determines the part of the brace:
** t: top end
** b: bottom end
** m: middle (for braces with odd number of sections)
** mt: middle, top (for braces with even numbers of segments)
** mb: middle, bottom (for braces with even numbers of segments)
** s: span (between middle and end)
** ht: half-brace top (for 2-segment braces)
** hb: half-brace bottom (for 2-segment braces)
** l: left end
** r: right end
** ml: middle, left (for braces with even numbers of segments)
** mr: middle, right (for braces with even numbers of segments)
** hl: half-brace left (for 2-segment braces)
** hr: half-brace right (for 2-segment braces)
* Parameter 3 is an optional width for the segment tiles (default is 25) in pixels. All tiles in one brace must be the same for alignment.
* Note that the table needs to have zero padding and cell spacing. The template {{tl|brace table parameters}} will set these for you.
* In the case of horizontal (under and over) brace, left is the "top" and right the "bottom"
== Example ==

GRAMMAR OF THE LANGUAGE
[FIRST CONJUGATION.]</noinclude>Future.
The future is characterized by tsch; it is to be observed that when the
verb is preceded by an adverb, preposition, or inseparable pronoun, it is
frequently added to it.
Singular.
EXAMPLE.
Ikatsch n'dappin, I shall or will be there
Kepetsch k'dappin, thou shalt or wilt be there
Nekamatsch w'dappin, he shall or will be there
Singular.
Achpil, be or stay thou there
Plural.
Kepenatsch n'dappineen, we shall or will be there
Witschitsch k'dappihhimo, ye shall or will be
there
Nekamawaktsch w'dappinewo, they shall or will
be there.
IMPERATIVE MOOD.
Plural.
Achpik, be or stay ye there
Achpitetsch, let him or he shall or must be or Achpititetsch, let them or they shall or must be
stay there
Achpitam, do thou let us be or stay there
or stay there
Achpitamook, do ye let us be or stay there.
Note by the Translator.-There is such a compound mixture of per-
sons and numbers in this mood, that it is impossible to designate either
by marginal annotations. It is not one of the least remarkable particu-
larities of this singular language.
SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD.
Present.
Singular.
Plural.
Achpiya, when or if I am there
Achpiyane, when or if thou art there
Achpite, when or if he is there
Achpiyenke, when or if we are there
Achpiyeque, when or if ye are there
Achpichtite, when or if they are there.
Preterite.
Singular.
Achpiyakup, as or when I was there
Achpiyanup, as or when thou wast there
Plural.
Acbpiyenkup, as or when we were there
Achpiyekup, as or when ye were there
Achpitup, as or when he was there
Achpichtitup, as or when they were there.
Pluperfect.
Singular.
Plural.
Achpiatpanne, If I had been there
Achpiyenkpanne, if we had been there
Achpianpanne, if thou hadst been there
Achpiyekpanne, if ye had been there
Achpichtitpanne, if they had been there.
Achpitpanne, if he had been there
Note. The subjunctive has only a pluperfect in the active and passive
voices, but not otherwise.<noinclude></noinclude>

*Note by the Translator-It will be observed that tsch, the sign of the future, is here affixed
in the singular to the adverb, and in the plural the verb is inflected by it. It will be found, in the
preceding page, combined in both numbers with the adverb fa, which signifies, where. I have
been informed by Mr Heckewelder, that either form may be adopted, whether in the singular or
plural, and that the ear is the best guide in such cases. So the negative may be expressed by
atta or matta, as the ear directs.<noinclude></noinclude>
