meaning of some Polynesian island names
Hi Hello Tauʻolunga, long time no write. Lately, I have been working on the articles :de:Anuta and :de:Fatutaka in the German Wikipedia. There I also came across island names such as Te Fatu and Fatuʻomanga. Can you recognize the meanings of these island names? I understand or believe:
*Fatu = rock
*Fatutaka = remote rock
*Te Fatu = The Rock?
*Fatuʻomanga = ??? rock
The latter two are tiny satellite islets of Anuta. Thank you, and greetings,--Ratzer (talk) 20:51, 8 Sune 2012 (UTC)
: fatu has many meanings in Tongan, but one of them (the last one in the dictionary) indeed is rock; cognate with vatu in Fiji, so probably the word is generally known in all western Polynesia. manga is branch in Tongan, but that does not say anything about Anutan. It might be a variant of maunga, mountain, as it is in Mangareva in the Gambier. Rock of the mountain ? --Tauʻolunga (talk) 05:25, 9 Sune 2012 (UTC)

Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture
Hello,
My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Butaritari-causeway.jpg). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:
http://www.freeenglishsite.com/
I also am a "Mormon" and my web site has a Mormon section that contains my Book of Mormon map (pictures of actual locations), my translation of Egyptian hieroglyphs from the Book of Abraham, and other items. I have shared and discussed these with various LDS general authorities and given many fireside presentations about them in Japan, Thailand and USA. My web site sections about the USA and World also have LDS membership and temple information for each country.
I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site:
1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at:
http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm
2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at:
http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm
3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at:
http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm
Slang Dictionary link at:
http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm
Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.
Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,
Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Good afternoon, Tauʻolunga.
Is it correct to give a literal translation of a geographical name? For example, the capital of China, Beijing, literally translates as "Northern Capital", but nowhere is this name literally translated. And there are many such examples.

Dear @Tauʻolunga<br>Mālō e lelei again.<br>Through various readings I've done on the English Wikipedia and with faulty translations in Tongan, I've been able to verify that your capital, Nuku'alofa, lies between two districts: Kolomotu'a and Kolofo'ou. This is why I'd like to inquire: which area holds greater importance, the one located in the Kolomotu'a district or the one in Kolofo'ou? Or are both equally significant? <br>Mālō ‘aupito.<br>We remain in touch.<br> David Ll L (Alea) 23:28, 15 Maʻasi 2024 (UTC)
:Your information is incorrect. Kolomotuʻa and Kolofoʻou are just 2 of the many suburbs of Nukuʻalofa. Albeit they are the 2 central ones. Both have importance. == Town of Nukuʻalofa ? ==
Hello Tauʻolunga - Mālō e lelei!
I would like to continue the previous topic by asking: Is there a "Town of Nukuʻalofa"? And if so, what are its territorial extent and its function?
As far as I understand, in terms of local government there are towns like Kolomotuʻa, Kolofoʻou, Maʻufanga and Haveluloto etc., and besides homonymous villages in terms of statistics there is an area called Greater Nukuʻalofa comprising the districts of Kolomotuʻa and Kolofoʻou. According to a notice in the Government Gazette 2018 there also seems to be a "town of Nukuʻalofa that was designated and published in the Tonga Government Gazette on 6 August 1984" (but that issue of the Gazette is not online) - according to this notice the territory of the Tonga National Centre (situated in the town/village of Tofoa?) is to be included in the "town of Nukuʻalofa".
Furthermore I have found a Royal Town of Nuku’alofa Ordinance 2010 citing a Royal Charter, but it seems to me that it is no longer in force (or perhaps never was) because it provided for the abolition of the offices of district officer and town officer within the Royal Town while in fact these officers still seem to have been elected (e.g. in 2019).
Thank you - Mālō ‘aupito! --Wikifex (talk) 11:20, 23 Siulai 2025 (UTC)
:There is only one word in Tongan: kolo. Big kolo are towns, small kolo are villages. You are free to choose where the border between big and small is. For sure Nukuʻalofa is big, so it is a town. But what about the suburbs, such as Kolomotuʻa? The usual translation for them is township.
:Anyway, the term Nukuʻalofa town is normally used for downtown Nukuʻalofa, that is Kolomotuʻa and Kolofoʻou.
:Tofoa, a farout suburb, where the national centre is or in fact the centre itself only, is special. It has been incorporated into Nukuʻalofa town. Reason: it is used as the parliament nowadays, after the old parliament building was destroyed in the last hurricane. According to law the parliament must be located in Nukuʻalofa town. Tauʻolunga (talk) 06:10, 24 Siulai 2025 (UTC)
::Thank you once more! Parliament relocation is a good explanation for the 2018 Gazette notice. (By distinguishing between town and village I was just referring to the different terminology actually used in law and statistics. Of course you are right: the Tongan term is always kolo.) -- Wikifex (talk) 07:27, 25 Siulai 2025 (UTC)
Next Steps: growing content and attracting more contributors to Tongan Wikipedia
Hello @Tauʻolunga,
Thank you very much for helping us set up the call-to-action banner to attract contributors on the Tongan Wikipedia homepage. This will support our efforts to engage native speakers and grow the Wikipedia community.
In preparation for the campaign, starting on 23rd March 2026, the work of creating the Event registration page and translating the content in: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:SSethi_(WMF)/Sandbox/Event:_Vital_Knowledge_Drive_2026#Overview are still pending.
To help move things forward, is it okay if we use an automatic translation service to translate the content from English to Tongan? We will also add the list of articles that participants will work on to the page.
Once we complete the above tasks, we will still need your help with the following:
* Reviewing the automatically translated content to make sure it is accurate
* Creating the Event Registration page (Event:Vital Knowledge Drive 2026) on the Tongan Wikipedia, since you have the rights to do this.
Please let us know whether we can proceed with the translation and if you can help review and create the Event Registration page. Feel free to ask me any questions.
We immensely appreciate all your support with this initiative.

Invitation to try the Starter Kit tool and share your feedback
Hello @Tauʻolunga,
As one of the editors who set up the Tongan Wikipedia, the Language Onboarding and Development initiative invites you to use the Starter Kit to configure and customize Tongan Wikipedia homepage.
Main page customization is one of the first features of the starter kit which will help you improve your main page's layout and mobile responsiveness, and structure your content with ease using pre-built templates. It will also help us evaluate how well it can improve the onboarding experience of administrators on your Wikipedia, so we can further use the learnings to improve the experience for new wikis graduating from the incubator. Visit this page to learn more about the Starter kit.
Here's how to get started:
* Access the Starter Kit here: https://starterkit.toolforge.org/
* Use the tool as illustrated in the screen record below to customize your main page.

* When you are done, share your feedback on this page on the following:
** The time it took to configure and customize your Wikipedia initially, and the time it took now with the Kit.
** The things you find most useful while configuring it.
** Tell us anything important to your language Wikipedia or your community's goals that you felt the configured main page templates were able to or unable to capture.
** The step in the configuration process where you felt stuck, confused, or unsure what to do next.
The configurations can be reverted like an edit from the “view history”, so don't be afraid to try it several times.
We would appreciate it if you could submit your feedback by the 11th of May 2026 so we can start adding more features based on it. If you have any questions or need assistance, let me know.
Thank you so much for your contributions to your Wikipedia and for helping us shape this tool for new Wikipedias. We will keep you updated on any additional things added to the starter kit in the future.

meaning of some Polynesian island names
Hello,
My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people.
Link at:

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.
Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,

<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">

For example Kolomotuʻa has the royal palace, Kolofoʻou has the main market. Tauʻolunga (talk) 04:58, 17 Maʻasi 2024 (UTC)
::So, I have some new questions. Aren't Vahe supposed to be divisions that group several localities? I would like to know especially because of this image showing 7 districts on the island of Tongatapu (). My doubt arises because Nuku'alofa is situated between two of this districts, and I would like to know the reason for this occurrence.<br><br>Mālō 'aupito.<br> David Ll L (Alea) 16:34, 17 Maʻasi 2024 (UTC)
:::These are election boundaries, named after the largest or most important village in that district. Anyway, do not put too much faith in that map, it is full with inaccuracies and even errors. Vahe are like provinces, and, traditionally, there are only 3 on Tongatapu (west, central, east).Tauʻolunga (talk) 05:40, 18 Maʻasi 2024 (UTC)
Town of Nukuʻalofa ?
Best regards

:I am not a supporter of AI translations, but in this case, as the text will be temporary, go ahead. And yes to the rest too. Tauʻolunga (talk) 08:10, 21 Maʻasi 2026 (UTC)
::Thank you so much, @Tauʻolunga. Here is the translation link for you to review: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:SSethi_(WMF)/Sandbox/Event:_Vital_Knowledge_Drive_2026/to you can make corrections directly. We are working on the article links, and we will add them once they are ready.
::Please share the Event page with me once you create it. Also, if you know any native Tongan speakers, you can introduce them to this campaign and encourage them to participate.
::We appreciate all your support with this test initiative and look forward to the outcome.

Once you have the right, you should be able to see the “enable event” tab on the Event:Vital Knowledge Drive 2026. If you don't see it, you can create another Event page and delete this one. == Invitation to try the Starter Kit tool and share your feedback ==

Best regards, UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 22:55, 27 ʻEpeleli 2026 (UTC)
:I would be the last one to claim that the homepage cannot use improvements. But those types from the starterkit seem to me not the ones. And I am too old to want to devote too much time on it. Tauʻolunga (talk) 05:43, 28 ʻEpeleli 2026 (UTC)
::Thank you @Tauʻolunga, for your feedback. I understand if you don’t have time to go into details, but if you have a moment, could you share a bit more about what you feel isn’t working with the Starter kit types for Tongan Wikipedia, or what you think would be a better approach? Any thoughts or examples would be very helpful. Best regards UOzurumba (WMF) (talk) 17:08, 29 ʻEpeleli 2026 (UTC)
:::In my opinion, but you may of course fully disagree with that, the current homepage shows the topics which are interesting for Tongans (king, villages, history, …) while I avoided largely things such as: all chemical elements, constellations, movies database, … Anybody interested in those, will directly go to the English wiki anyway where much more information is given than those minimal stubs which very often make little sense in the first place. A typical example: Lūsia.
:::Other nice things:picture of the day, did you know that,… will not work properly because there are not enough relevant pictures for all days. So I think it is not good to draw too much attention to such things as starterkit seem to do. It is probably ok for a wiki with many articles, but to.wiki is too small. Better that people easily see what is available than to drown them in many choices. Tauʻolunga (talk) 05:41, 30 ʻEpeleli 2026 (UTC)
You may be an eligible candidate for the U4C election
<div lang="en" dir="ltr" class="mw-content-ltr">
Greetings,
The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) seeks candidates for the 2026 election. The U4C is the global committee responsible for overseeing enforcement of the Universal Code of Conduct. Elections are held annually, if elected a committee member serves for two years.
This year the U4C requires candidates to hold administrator rights on at least one wiki, which is why you are being contacted as you appear to hold this right. There are other requirements, such as candidates must be at least 18 years old and may not be employed by the Wikimedia Foundation or other related chapters and affiliates. You can find more information in the call for candidates on Meta-wiki. Additionally, the committee's working language is English; some ability to communicate in English is required.
The election opens on 18 May, if you are eligible and interested you have until 10 May to submit your candidacy. There will be a week in between for candidates to answer questions from the community. Voting takes place privately in SecurePoll, successful candidates must receive at least 60% support. More information is available on the 2026 Elections page, including timelines and other candidacy information. If you read over the material and consider yourself qualified, please consider submitting your name to run for the committee. If you think someone else in your community might be interested and qualified, please encourage them to run.
